I was pleasantly surprised by this story, with all the whining I read about it. I can't see that editing would've made it that much better than it already was. I loved the fact that it was like 2 books in one . 2 story's within the same book is always a treat. Yet the author melded it together just right to make for a book I could not put down. I will definitely read more books by Irina Shapiro. Great job!

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.Such a sad story in many ways. A young woman who marries a complete brute & she desires nothing more than to be with his cousin /brother. The new Laird supports the Bonnie Prince & is captured at Culloden.This is also the story of a modern woman from N.Y., who inherits a castle from a man who claimed he was her grandfather. He leaves her a distillery, along with stocks and bounds. She has to go to Scotland to claim her inheritance. While in Scotland, she finds herself increasingly attracted to the young lawyer who is guiding her.Two women, two romances, and 2 mysteries to solve.

I am a big fan of Susanna Kearsley's books and Amazon suggested Irina Shapiro as another author I might enjoy. The Inheritance was the first book by this author that I have read and even though it's not the best book I have ever read, I am willing to read more books by Ms. Shapiro. The Inheritance has all of the elements that I enjoy in a book of historical fiction: a castle in Scotland, the battle of Culloden and at least one romance. This book has two romances, one in the 18th century between Isobel and Rory and one in the present with Katie and Danny. The action goes back and forth between the past and the present and both love stories are tied up nicely at the end. Was this book as good as those written Susanna Kearsley? No, but Ms. Shapiro is a much better writer than other reviewers give her credit for being. She did a nice job of creating likable characters and moving the action along without getting bogged down. In addition, her dialogue was smooth and believable. Her supernatural element (Katie channeling Isobel) was rather weak which is unlike Susanna Kearsley but the connection between the two women was still interesting and helped to move the 18th century love story to a conclusion.My biggest complaint is that the inordinate number of errors in the text were a big distraction. I have found this to be true in other Kindle books and it is very disappointing. I suggest that Amazon work harder at creating error free books for Kindle readers.

I love to find modern Scottish romances and this one does not fail. To make it more exciting, you glimpse back to the time before Culloden and forbidden love. I loved the quest to find the truth and the love shared between the couples. This book is the one you keep reading late, dream about story while sleeping, and wake up early to pick up where you left off. Highly recommend! Truly a wonderful read!

The story is set in two time zones, 1745 and 2010 and involves two countries - Scotland and USA. Although basically a love story the historical facts from 1745 revolve around the Scots attempt to restore King Charles to the throne, culminating with the devistating loss at the Battle of Culloden. The main character is American in 2010, who inherits a castle, and is befriended by the Scottish solicitor and inevitably becoming romantically involved.The story weaves it's way through history, dreams and lost letters to discover the reason for the inheritance.

Excellent book..first time I read Irina Shapiro and was not disappointed I couldn't wait for the next chapter a real turn pager!! I love stories that take you back in time and then into the present again! I got her other book The Passage and looking forward to starting that one. My favorite author, is Barbara Erskine, who writes the same way...so now I have two favorite authors!!!!

To me, the greatest compliment I could give a book is that I couldn't put it down once I started reading. With The Inheritance, I read it in ONE DAY. That says something. This is not my normal genre of reading, but it certainly won't be my last. I also cannot understand all the vicious reviews on here about this book. For me to keep reading a book non-stop, means that it kept my interest, the characters were wonderful, and the story line drew me in.I don't know what everyone complaining about the mistakes mean, but I found none. I think that the book probably has had an overhaul and re-edit. I certainly didn't query that the book was written by a high schooler as one reviewer said - I think they must have been reading a different book to me.Actually, I have only ever reviewed one author before, and that was Debra Geary, but really felt I needed and wanted to with The Inheritance, especially after all the bad reviews I see here. I know everyone has a different opinion on books, but to this extent? I don't think so.I most definitely will be looking to read all of the author's books now after reading this one. It looks like I have a new genre of book to read.

I liked this author. The characters and the stories were interesting. The historical story was full of twist and turns. I hope the author writes a series on the Rory and Isobel tale and let's the readers follow them to America and get to know about their family and lives.
