I hesitated about whether to review this book, because the information is *very* good. Brunson and Walberg know Linux, and they're decent writers, too. A rare combo in the tech field. The reason I knocked off two stars was due entirely to Pearson and their garbage software. It's not bad enough that you have to dig a USB optical drive out of your attic in order to install the software. No, the practice exams aren't actually *ON* the DVD ... it just installs some ancient front-end that "talks" to Pearson's DRM server to allow you to access a download of the practice exams. Whoever came up with this idea should be immediately fired. It flat out did not work on Windows 10, and don't ever think you're going to be able to run this software on Linux itself. Disgraceful. (Do I sound annoyed about this yet?)I emailed Pearson's tech support and got a canned response. Never got a human, just a survey about "how well they'd helped me," which I answered quite bluntly. Bundling useless software with good material just frustrates the student. Sybex does it the right way, where it's all web-based.But as I mentioned at the beginning, the information in this book is sound. If you read it and understand, you will pass the exam. I did not use this book much because of the frustration I experienced with the software the night before taking LX0-103, so I didn't use at all for LX0-104. But I have flipped through this book and read at least half of every chapter. It's a shame that the quality of the text is offset by the awful software (I keep going on about it but I bought this book specifically for the practice exams). Passed both my exams by a good margin and am now Linux+/LPIC-1 certified.

Really well written. By that i mean it's not written like a dense technical manual (although who doesn't love a technical manual?). I can really feel like the author is trying to pour their knowledge into my head. I especially enjoy the parts where they give you a real world example of why you need to do something in order to avoid a bad scenario from happening. I'm planning to take my Comptia Linux plus in the next two months. I am still supplementing this with training videos and online articles. That's not to say this book isn't good at prepping you for the Linux+ exam, but i prefer to have multiple sources of information when going through a certification.Would certainly recommend you buying this book if you are looking to get certified, or even if you just really want to learn more about linux in general and are still at a more "entry level" like I am.

I bought a few different books and used free sources to study for the Linux+ / LPIC-1 exams. This book is probably the best one out there. Also, the testing software that comes with it is better than it's next best rival, the Sybex book / test questions. As other people often do, I'd caution that you still want to use other sources; especially regarding linux, you'll find lots of good, free stuff out there. In places where I wanted a deeper understanding, I would end up finding good answers on one of the (many) linux sites out there. However, this book is a great way to keep a lot of it right in front of you so you don't need to look up everything on the web yourself.

Wow! This book helped me in more ways than I could have previously thought. I passed on the first go and the included practice tests are essential and very similar to the actual exam.

If you already have some dipping-the-toes experience with Linux, this is a great resource to work through and make sure you've got your bases covered before the tests. I just took the 103 test and passed on my first try. That alone warrants a thumbs up from me! Overall, the book is more focused on developing you as a real-world sysadmin as opposed to someone who'll regurgitate the right answers for a multiple choice test. Which is great. Of course, the material is structured alongside the exam objectives so you'll know you'll be prepared for the tests.Of course, no one resource will cover EVERYTHING, but this book covers pretty much everything you'll need to know and then some. The only additional study resource I needed were Linux man pages, because those go more in-depth with the commands you work with, and you'll need to know how to use them in ways that aren't covered in the book. There is practice material on a provided DVD which is kind of a "C'mon man...". It really should be in the cloud these days. I don't have a DVD drive on my macbook. I used the CompTIA Linux+ Certmaster Practice web app instead, which I think is awesome. It's an extra hundred bucks on top of your exam voucher and you get a retake voucher as well. However, I can't speak for the absolute beginner's experience with this book. Before tackling it, you might be better off consulting other resources to get your feet wet (installing Linux on a virtual machine and getting familiar with the command line).

I used this book, CBT Nuggets, and Linux+/LPIC-1 All-In-One. This book was much harder to read and follow than CBT or All-In-One. I couldn't reasonably pass the end of chapter exams in this book, even though I read this book AFTER CBT and All-In-One. The All-In-One made more sense, and even co-incided with CBT Nuggets videos.I still kind of recommend it because if you're new to Linux, getting information from different sources is still useful.

I'm very happy with this textbook. It seems to be chock full of well organized information. I've just started formally learning Linux after 15 years or so of personal/professional use. I feel that I have really learned something after completing each chapter.
