About the Author

Vaughn L. McKoy, JD, MBA is a corporate lawyer and executive with Public Service Enterprise Group, Inc., New Jersey’s largest energy company. Prior to joining the company, Mr. McKoy served as a federal and state prosecutor, respectively. As an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, he conducted numerous complex federal investigations and successfully prosecuted several noteworthy cases. Thereafter, Mr. McKoy was appointed by the Attorney General to lead the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, the State’s largest prosecutor’s office. Active in the community, Mr. McKoy serves on several boards including the Rutgers University Board of Overseers and the St. Peter’s Healthcare System Board of Governors. He is also a member of the Corporate Advisory Council for the Boys and Girls Clubs of New Jersey, Inc. and Chair of the New Jersey Leadership Council of the United Negro College Fund. He also served as Chair of the New Jersey Community Development Corp. and Vice-Chair of the Newark Watershed and Conservation Development Corp. for many years. A native of Paterson, New Jersey, Mr. McKoy was a scholar-athlete and received his BS from Rutgers University and his JD from Rutgers Law School, Newark. He is admitted to practice law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The love of learning and meeting new challenges motivated Mr. McKoy to pursue and earn an MBA from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. Mr. McKoy has received numerous awards and recognition for his professional accomplishments. The Record and Star Ledger identified Mr. McKoy as one of the “People to Watch” in 2011 and 2007, respectively. In August 2006, Mr. McKoy was featured on the cover of New Jersey Super Lawyers, Rising Stars Edition as one of the top young lawyers in New Jersey. He also received the prestigious “40 Under-Forty Achievement Award” bestowed by The Network Journal in 2004. Mr. McKoy is a 2000 Fellow of Leadership New Jersey, a public-private partnership that prepares emerging leaders to confront statewide challenges. In connection with his many roles, Mr. McKoy has many media appearances to his credit and continues to emerge as a leader and public speaker. Vaughn McKoy took me through my own life's up and downs proving we all can reach our greatest goals when we don't give up, and learn-to-learn from others. His mentor Mr. G (CEO Arthur M. Goldberg a business mogul and Rutgers alumnus) proves that one very fortunate man willing to help a kid from the inner-city of New Jersey can transform the world. McKoy's adventures, twists and turns, and ultimately lessons are heighten as we discover Mr. G's own incredible success was inspired by a man who mentored Mr. G when he was the guy with lessor means. Mr. Mckoy's life as one of Americas top lawyers proves mentoring others is one of Gods greatest gifts. The impact of mentoring, giving back, contributing to others is clearly an access to having it all in life. I highly recommend this book for young adult so they can see a pathway to success is possible with their lives. I also recommend this book for every adult committed to being the best they can be and making a difference with others. Bravo!!!

I have read many books that have honesty flowing throughout it's pages; but none like this! Playing Up not only is an honest portrayal of one man's journal from boyhood to manhood, it's grit and candor grips the reader and it's in-your-face realism is a breath of fresh air in a world of stale story-telling -- This book has a real happy ending for the author. I found the book hard to put down and I could relate to some of the childhood mischief, woopings, neighborhood friends that were up to no good and the pressure to want to go along to get along. This is a triumphant story that will inspire any one who reads it and I would encourage any parent with young boys to pick up a copy and give to your son so that they made read it and be inspired! There are many people in this world who want to see a young man with promise succeed and they don't have to be from the same cultural background; this book proves that.This is a must read!

This book changed my life, and it was given to me as a gift at a very crucial time in my life. I am a 22 year old multi-racial young man and a recent college graduate starting my professional career. This book encouraged me to undertake even the most seemingly insurmountable challenges and to not be afraid to fail. Most importantly, Vaughn taught me the value of mentoring someone younger than me and passing this wisdom on as it was passed to me. This is a book that can reach and intellectually stimulate all readers, from the most academically accomplished individual to a middle-school youth struggling to find direction. Vaughn's story is a testament to the fact that given the right guidance and motivation, even the most underprivileged can succeed. Vaughn is truly a role model for the Black Community and our nation's youth. Give someone the gift of inspiration! I've already ordered 4 more copies

A moving story that addresses not just the importance of determination and hard work, but also the importance of stepping outside of one's comfort zone and how to effectively accept help when it is offered. The book could have been titled "How to Pay It Forward."Also, I have had the privilege of hearing the author speak on a couple of occasions. He is a gifted orator. Hear him if you get the chance.

"Playing up" was a wake up call for me, I read it at a time when everything in my life seemed to be falling apart. Vaughn Mckoy's story helped me realize that everyone has the potential to excel and succeed, regardless of their situation. I've read many books over the course of my life, but this was the first that I could really relate to.
